At Adirondack Corp., we’ve been crafting high-quality Chicken Coops and Animal Run-In Shelters since 1991. While we take care of the heavy lifting—from the rough-cut lumber construction to the professional delivery—homeowners are responsible for ensuring their new flock complies with local ordinances.
Before you order your coop, here is what you need to know about limits, roosters, and permits.
Most municipalities within our service area (including Otsego, Delaware, Broome, and Albany counties) have specific "Backyard Chicken" laws.
Hen Limits: Many towns restrict the number of birds based on lot size. For example, in many suburban areas of Suffolk and Nassau counties, the limit is often between 4 and 8 hens.
Rooster Restrictions: In high-density areas or smaller zip codes, roosters are frequently prohibited due to noise ordinances. Always check if your specific town allows roosters before adding one to your Adirondack Corp. coop.
Zoning & Setbacks: Most codes require your coop to be placed in the rear yard and maintain a "setback" (often 10–25 feet) from property lines and neighbors' homes.
Whether you need a permit often depends on the size of the structure.
Building Permits: Larger structures like our Garages and Pole Barns always require permits, but even a Utility Shed or large Chicken Coop may require one if it exceeds a certain square footage (often 100–144 sq. ft.).
Land Maps/Site Plans: Most permit applications will require a simple "site plan" or land map. This shows where you intend to place the coop relative to your house and property lines.
Zoning Permits: Some areas require a "Zoning Permit" even if the structure is small, just to verify that you aren't exceeding the allowed number of animals.
Regulations can change at the town or village level. We strongly recommend contacting your local Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) or Building Department before installation.

At Adirondack Corp., we have been building more than just high-quality structures since 1991; we have been building lasting relationships with our neighbors across 21 counties in New York and Pennsylvania. We would like to extend a very special thank you to one of our valued customers, Bill Kistner of Poughkeepsie, NY, for providing the inspiration for this article.
After Bill shared the specific local rules and regulations he encountered within his township, it became clear that navigating the path to poultry ownership can be a bit complex. We wanted to take his experience and turn it into a helpful resource for all our clients. Our goal is to ensure that your transition from purchasing store-bought eggs to gathering them fresh from your own Adirondack Corp. Chicken Coop is as smooth and stress-free as possible. Whether you are installing a new Animal Run-In Shelter, a Fire Shed, or one of our brand-new Garages, we are here to help you stay informed and compliant with your local community guidelines.
